It's sad that he belittled such a great movie because of it's box office failure. However, like I've said considering that this is the brainchild of talented people like Michael Crichton and John McTiernan it's hard not to feel a bit disappointed in this rather wishy-washy action adventure film - particularly knowing how great their films have been individually prior to this rather average collaboration. Antonio Banderas' performance is intelligent and understated. But as with that poem and Crichton's variaton, those who dig it will really, really like it.
There's something for everyone here; fans of horror, fans of action, fans of classic literature should all find something to enjoy about this film. It's fabulous in my opinion. Weird we have to seek the tender arms of piracy when looking for quality. The buildings in the village and the great hall look like original replicas they have in Scandinavian museums.
While Ibn and his people are intelligent and well-mannered, the Vikings are a rowdy and sometimes unpleasant lot, with an unquenchable appetite for food, alcohol, and women. I watched it a few months back and just felt a yearning for some awesome masculine Norseman swordplay and this movie don't disappoint. It may not be the best film ever made, but its still one of my very favorites. Our perspective is intimate and that lends a great deal of excitement to the movie experience. The scene at the watchtower for example, esp. The camera work in this film is dangerous and thrilling. They stay the night and the next day a young boy reaches the camp to call the warriors home: The Wendol, creatures of the Mist, have started attacking their homeland, killing and eating everyone in their way.

Plust it has one of the awesomest soundtracks in fantasy film history. They took all, that is possible to put in the movie and made that movie. Okay, so it's not entirely historically accurate and suffers from production problems and an occasional overdose of testosterone, but it's not a bad movie by any means. The scenery is beautiful, and so was the cinematography.

Eventually surrounded by the frightening and ferocious foe, Ibn must conquer his personal fears and help battle the illusive invaders--who emerge out of the shroud of fog in the black of the night. But all the others deliver peak performances. Of all the villages, in all the tents in all the world you just happened to walk in to mine. These guys should be very proud.

But, if you enjoy a classic tale of good vs. The 13th Warrior is for anyone who believes in honor, valor and courage. While Ibn and his people are intelligent and well-mannered, the Vikings are a rowdy and sometimes unpleasant lot, with an unquenchable appetite for food, alcohol, and women. Quite why the 13th warrior cannot be a Norse warrior is anyone's guess - maybe it's explained in Crichton's novel, but hell it's certainly never explained in the film. A cultured diplomat joins a band of savage warriors in time to meet an even more fearsome enemy in this historical adventure.
Nothing like 3 feet of a German-made Ulfberht sword in the hands of a huge skillful Viking Berserker. The acting and directing was excellent. The oracle forces a thirteenth warrior to accompany the Vikings, but this must not be a man from the north. The whole ensemble cast was a joy to watch as they moved through-out the film as a team of men who valued each others strengths and talents. However, in time he develops an understanding and respect for the Viking warriors and is welcomed into their society by their leader, Buliwyf. I've actually just re-read my summary for the film and deduced that it doesn't make much sense, but to my recollection that is exactly how the story is established so I can only apologise and reiterate things exactly how I saw them.
